World Champions Ben Johns and Christine McGrath are coming to the mountains

World Champions Ben Johns and Christine McGrath are coming to the mountains and going to put on some clinics.  If you have had your head in a pickle jar and haven’t heard of these two, well, a quick google search will tell you that they are the best in the world.  Ben has only entered the scene a couple years now and has won every major tournament in every category there is to win.  Christine has been around a little longer and is a permanent fixture atop the podium.
Check out the flyer above and sign up quick as space is limited.  There is two ways to pay to ensure you have a spot.  PayPal “click friends and family” or mail a check to me.  All the info is on the flyer.  Make sure you specify which clinic you will be attending.
The clinics are 2 hours in length with both pros and they will be sticking around after to play a little as time allows.  Clinics are designed for the intermediate player.  There are a couple 3.0 clinics as well for the beginner/intermediate player.
Feel free to pass this along to your distribution lists or anyone interested in attending.  If you have any questions, let me know.

Montrose Sweet 16 Tournament – Saturday, November 25th

Montrose is hosting our 2nd Sweet 16 Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, November 25th. Work off some of the extra Thanksgiving calories on the pickleball court.
Registration is now open by calling customer service at 970-249-7705. Come and play pickleball in our new gyms. We encourage players from Montrose and surrounding towns to come play with us. The registration fee is $10. Prizes and snacks provided.
Sign up for 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0+ divisions. The 3.0 and 3.5 will play from 9:00 am – 11:00 am (with open courts until noon) and 4.0+ will play from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm (with open courts until 3:00 pm).
A key feature which makes this format attractive is that players do not need to find a partner to participate. You rotate and get to play with a variety of partners. It is fast paced and FUN!

Here is a summary of how it works:

  1. Players sign up as individuals, in advance.  Since we need exactly16 players per event, those who sign up must commit to show up.  We will have one or two alternates in case of a last minute cancelation.
  2. Every player gets to play with 6 other players.
  3. We will post the rotation schedule. The schedule shows  you who your partner and opponents will be. You will play 6 games and have 2 byes.
  4. These games are timed. You will play 15 minutes, and then rotate with a new partner and new opponents. The event lasts a little over 2 hours.
  5. Final score is by “win” / “loss” per game. We will also track points. The individual player’s wins are totaled at the end of the games to determine the winners!

The first 16 who register will get to play. We have a lot of courts so we can run more than one group of 16 in each division if there is the need. We ran two, 3.5 divisions when we hosted this tournament in February.
If you call to register and are told the division is full, be sure to get put on the waiting list as we need two alternates and I will run another division if we have enough players.

I need a few volunteers to help run the tournament. Let me know if you can help. I can be reached at 970-252-4884 or by cell at 970-209-1557.

Register soon!
See you on the courts!

Saturday Pickleball in Basalt!

I have been given the OK to have pickleball in the Basalt Middle School Gym on Saturdays from 9am-11:30.  I would like to continue the good habit of drilling for 30 minutes before open play at 9:30.  The dates given so far are: Nov 18, Dec 2,9,16. (All Basalt gymnasiums are to be resurfaced over Thanksgiving week)  On Friday, December 29 I would like to have our annual New Years pot luck party.
All abilities are welcome on Saturdays and let’s see if this helps to alleviate any over-crowding issues that positive growth has created. I think all of our members have done a remarkable job of recruiting new players.  Let’s keep it going.  There will still be a $2 per person charge. Continue to park in the back and come in the back of the gym.

Keep your paddles up:)

Friday Night Pickleball in Basalt

Friday Oct 20 is the start of pickleball in Basalt. We play at Basalt Middle School on School Road. It’s all been remodeled so they want us to park in the front parking lot and go through the front door. Walk past the auditorium doors on the left then take the double doors to the left and you can’t miss the gym. I get into the gym at 5:30pm after middle school sports are finishing then proceed to put the lines on the floor and set up the nets. If anyone wants to come and help, it is always welcome. We start play about 5:45. I would like to start a good habit for those that want to pick up their game. I will have three courts for the first 45 minutes doing different drills. Everyone can work on their dinks, volleys, and third shot drops and serves so we’ll do some circuit training. It’s also a great way to warm up and stretch. About 6:30 we’ll start matches with the signup on the black board. This sport is exploding so I welcome all mo matter where you hail from-visitors always welcome.
The cost is only $2 to help pay for the weekly rolls of painters’ tape used to line the courts. If there are any questions, feel free to call me at 970-379-8163
I hope to do every Friday til Memorial Day, but I was told that around Thanksgiving the gym may be closed due to resurfacing the court. I plan on a New Years pot luck. Due to New Years being on a weekend, We thought that Friday 29 Dec will be a fun time to get together.

Can’t wait to see everyone.

Pickleball in Vail at Golden Peak – Jenny Rink Art Work

From Charlie: Becky K. is creating a very nice piece for everyone to sign and send to Joe from Vail Valley pickleballers in remembrance of Jenny.
It’s designed so everybody can sign it. Getting it signed this late in the season is a challenge.
For those who won’t make it to OB’s, Becky or I will bring it to the Golden Peak Pickleball Courts on Saturday for signing. I believe this may be the last of OB’s events for the season (thanks,OB!) so everyone should attend that can.
Point of clarification: no donation required to sign the artwork. If anyone wants to chip in $10 to help cover the cost they can give it to Charlie Penwill or Becky Kieler. Donations to American Cancer in Jenny’s name are private, personal, and quite separate. Thanks

Gypsum Daze tournament – July 14

If you are interested in playing in the Gypsum Daze tournament on Friday, July 14, you can register now at  Alternatively, you can sign up in person at the Gypsum Recreation Center. Please do not call the Rec Center to register.
A few things to know:
Regular, “recreational play” will not take place the morning of July 14.

The tournament format will be “double elimination”.

The Onix Pure 2 ball will be used.

You and your partner each need to register separately. If you or your partner do not already have an account with WECMRD, you’ll be prompted on the website to create an account.
The cost to participate is $15 per person.

Caution: It is possible that there will be a number of people without a partner who show up to play the morning of the tournament. There is no way to know in advance how many may show up or their skill level. Therefore, it is very important that you secure a partner prior to the event. Single players cannot be guaranteed a partner, as we can’t predict who may show up in need of one.

Many thanks to Scott Ruff and Lucas Rivera of the Gypsum Recreation Center for organizing and being in charge of this event!
